A death doula, or end-of-life doula, is a dedicated companion who empowers individuals and their families to navigate the end-of-life journey with confidence, dignity, and peace of mind.
They provide emotional, spiritual, and practical support, helping clients to articulate and achieve their wishes, and facilitating informed decision-making around care options, advance care directives, and funeral arrangements.
What a death doula does:
Offers emotional support, fostering a safe space for open discussions and promoting emotional healing and growth. Advocates for clients' wishes, ensuring their autonomy and agency are respected.
Facilitates planning, providing guidance on end-of-life preparations, including funeral arrangements and advance care planning. Provides practical assistance, helping with tasks, paperwork, and communication, and offering reassurance and clarity around the dying process.
Educates and connects clients with valuable resources, promoting informed decision-making and empowerment. Who they support: Individuals facing terminal or life-limiting illnesses, providing them with hope, support, and a sense of control. Their families and loved ones.
What they don't do:
Death doulas are not a replacement for professional medical care or palliative care services, and are not licensed medical professionals, unable to prescribe medication.
